Back in 1996 the city center of Alphen aan den Rijn – The Netherlands, was starting to be completely rebuild.
As part of my education at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, I made some suggestions for the typology and shape of the buildings on the new “Rijnplein/Rhine Square” after seeing the visuals for the city center.
The planned buildings in the visuals issued by the city were straight boxes. In my overview drawing I suggested using structured facades like the traditional dutch houses as well as brick stone. Furthermore my large triangular shapes and round windows at the top of them must have somehow inspired Architect Gunnar Daan who made the final design of the so-called “Stepping Stone Building”.
Unfortunately, my ideas for using pergolas with plants and water was not integrated in the final version of the square.
